Some devises are investigated
Chapter 11.
Nytfnas
“You have done well.”
Tarranth turned and there was Herdir. “Did you arrange for this stuff to be here?”
“It was my grandfather, actually. You know how little my family trusts each other and grandfather wanted to make certain that some things were secure. He did not anticipate how fast and how far things would fall or that Lyrei would destroy the family fortress with him inside.”
“That would be Usanaar.”
“Yes it would.”
“Why are you putting spikes in the new gods’ wheels?”
“I have my reasons and I think that they will remain my own.”
“Do you know how all this works?”
“Not as I should. It is better that you look for yourselves and be more thorough than I tell you and you miss something important.”
“We have the feeling that the new gods will need these things soon.”
“You know that they have a working fusor at last.”
“They lifted it from a ship. They were idiots and missed something rather important.”
“That was?”
“The fusor they lifted was not the only fusor aboard. Gunag and his cousin had another devise, in pieces aboard.”
Herdir started to laugh his head off. “Should you be telling me that?”
“The devise isn’t where it is easy to get at, is in pieces and I don’t know where it is, so I couldn’t tell you. Gunag and his cousins have been careful since they got it back.”
“What happened to the young folk that Jastira dropped on Jorge’s wedding?”
“The Justiciars had an auction, they were all sold off, to family.”
“A nice little fix by the Silverin, probably. They take care of their own. I have other stops to make. This may be useful.” Herdir handed a crystal to Tarranth. “Some people have been rather careless when they meet.”
Chapter 12.
House Virstina.
Greg turned to Rod and said, “We have this working. The question is what we do with it.”
“Bill is in the woods with Moonshine and she isn’t going to let him out for a bit. We should have him back in a five day.”
“Moonshine likes to have her grip on Bill, doesn’t she?”
“It isn’t as bad as it looks. They have been forced to be separate a lot of the time, since Bill is going to college in Ironton and Moonshine is in Chatsrey. So they can’t be together as much as Moonshine would like. Then there are Bill’s projects that have been eating more and more of his time. So Moonshine takes advantage when she can.”
“How did they meet? All of sudden, there she was in Desert Howl, chasing after Bill.”
“They met as a result of Bill’s trip to the Empire the first time. Bill was shopping in the Lower City and Moonshine spotted him. She liked what she saw and started to arrange things so that they could talk, getting rather frustrated as she kept missing Bill. Finally she transformed into a cat, stowed away on the flight that Bill was leaving on and caught Bill at the airport, still as a cat. They came down to Desert Howl and had a great time. Moonshine returned home and came back to dance at the Mermaid Theatre in Chatsrey.”
“So that is how they met. Why is a cat in here?”
Rod looked at the cat and said, “I caught you, Bill.”
“Yes, you did. So, what is going on here?”
“We think that the mad scientist stuff is to create new bodies for things that need them.”
“The new gods.”
“Yes.”
Another cat appeared out of Jump and said, “Bill, this looks like work.”
“Not mine, Moonshine. Rod wanted to show this to me.”
“What does it do?”
“We think that it creates bodies for people that need them or enhances people,” Rod said. “We’ve been looking at this for some time now.”
“This is all Proscribed.”
“We know. On the other hand, we have hints that it might be needed. We’re trying to figure out what we need to do.”
“I will get some help. Come on, Bill. We need to talk to my father and find an old fae.”
The cats disappeared and Greg said, “That was fun.”
“It was. On the other hand, we need to keep at this.”
